3rd International Conference on Structural Adhesive Bonding - AB2015, Porto (Portugal). 02-03 July 2015

Summary:
The adhesive bonding is today one of the most widespread techniques for advanced structures. Among the various types of adhesives, pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA) have a number of advantages such as a quick adhesion, easy application and a high level of impact strength and vibration damping. Within these PSA, the acrylic foam tapes are increasingly used to replace mechanical joints or adhesive in liquid or paste [1]. Applications of these tapes include sectors such as public transport vehicles, street furniture, architectural panels, etc. [2]. Some advantages of PSA's are; sealing ability, flexibility, damping, and fatigue resistance in the case of acrylic foam tapes. In addition they do not require curing, have a good resistance to UV radiation and long-term durability compared to other adhesives [3]. This work discusses the static and fatigue behavior of aluminum single lap joints adhesively bonded with three acrylic double sided VHBTM tapes. The results showed the important role of primer when these joints are under fatigue loading. An increase in the percentage of cohesive failure and failure strength were found when primer was used. The fatigue life of joints under accelerated aging processes is over 1 million cycles when high performance VHB tapes are used.
